NEW YORK

New York State is situated in the north-east of the United States, and forms part of the border with Canada. More than 19 million people live in the 139 831 km2, making it the third most populous state after California and Texas. New York City, with a population of 8 million, is the largest city in the USA, though Albany is the state capital. Geography is varied, and includes the Coastal Plain, many rivers, mountains and waterfalls, and part of the Great Lakes. There are also extensive forestlands. The climate varies from region to region, but tends to be mild in coastal areas and more extreme, particularly in winter, in upstate New York. The economy is also varied, from the financial might of Wall Street to huge sugar refineries. Other areas include dairy farming, fashion, printing, chemicals, electrical equipment and flour-milling. Attractions and monuments include Niagara Falls, the Statue of Liberty and Adirondack Park, the largest state park in the USA.

History

The area was first inhabited in approximately 10 500 BC. Native Americans played an important role in the early history of the state, whereas Europeans only settled in 1624, following Henry Hudson's exploration of what is now the Hudson River. The Dutch established a colony and named it New Netherland, but in 1664 it was renamed New York when the British took over the region. Britain imposed high taxes and trade restrictions which led to violent protest and the eventual outbreak of the American War of Independence. The constitution of the United States was drawn up in 1787, and in 1788 New York became the 11th state. The early to mid 19th century saw a flood of immigrants from Europe, most of whom entered through New York City, and many of whom went no further. The period following the Civil War brought more immigrants, and helped shape New York's cosmopolitan appearance.

Politics

The governor of New York is elected to serve a four-year term. A 61-member Senate and a 150-member Assembly make up the state legislature. New York State is represented in the U.S. House of Representatives by 31 members, and in the U.S. Senate by two members.
