NEVADA

The state of Nevada occupies an area of 286 367 km2 in the eastern United States between California and Utah. Nevada's population has been rapidly growing in the past few years, reaching 2 495 530; a 25% increase over 6 years. The majority of the people live in the areas around Reno and Las Vegas, the largest city, and other urban areas such as Carson City, the capital, North Las Vegas and Boulder City. The landscape varies from snow-covered mountains to spectacular desert valleys, including Death Valley National Park, which it shares with California. The economy is dominated by tourism and entertainment from the casinos of Las Vegas to the ski resorts of Lake Tahoe. For many years mining was the major industry, and Nevada is still the nation's leading producer of gold, silver and mercury. The climate of Nevada is dry, with the lowest average precipitation of all the states, and wide differences between day and night temperatures

History

Earliest traces of human life in Nevada date back 12 000 years. The first European settlers were confronted by three groups of Native Americans, the Paiute, the Shoshone and the Washoe. In 1821, when Mexico won independence from Spain, Nevada came under Mexican control. Many trappers and emigrants searching for a new life in California passed through the region, though the tide was stemmed by the ill-fated Donner party, many of whom died in the mountains, with the survivors resorting to cannibalism. The emigration boom began again following the discovery of gold in California, and under the terms of a peace treaty the US acquired Nevada from Mexico. The area came under the rule of the Mormons in Utah until the creation of the territory of Nevada in 1861. The first major discovery of gold and silver was made in 1859, and in 1864 Nevada became the 36th state of the Union.

Politics

According to the Nevada constitution of 1864 the governor cannot be elected for more than two consecutive four-year terms. The people of Nevada elect a 42-member Assembly, who hold office for two years, and a 21-member Senate, who are elected for four years. Nevada is represented in the US Congress by two Senators and by two members in the House of Representatives.
