DELAWARE LLC

Delaware, an eastern state bordering on the Atlantic, is the second smallest state, occupying an area of only 6 209 km2, and also the lowest, averaging only 18 metres in elevation. The geography is mainly flat and swampy, with a climate giving hot, humid summers and mild winters. The majority of the 853 475 population live in urban areas such as Dover, the capital, and Wilmington, the largest city in the state. The major industry is the chemical industry, though Delaware is also hugely popular as a business centre, with both large and small companies being attracted by the unrestrictive incorporation law. Since 1964 40% of US companies have transferred their registration to the state of Delaware, and today the 500 largest companies in the USA as well as almost two thirds of the companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange cite Delaware as their state of registration.

History

Henry Hudson, of the Dutch East India Company led the first European expedition to Delaware Bay in 1609. He encountered Native Americans, who became known as the Delaware people. The British and Dutch competed for control of the area, and it was the British who succeeded in establishing supremacy. The area was acquired by Pennsylvania in 1682, but the people feared and resented control by the Quakers, and in 1704 Delaware became a separate colony under Pennsylvanian rule. Delaware was one of the original 13 states of the Union, and was the first to adopt the American Constitution. The state provided strong opposition to the British during the American Revolution. A French immigrant established a gunpowder mill in the area close to Wilmington, and the company was to go on to form the strong industrial foundations of the state. Following the decline in industry of the 1970s the government began taking measures to promote the state as a business centre.

Politics

The governor, elected for a four-year term, is the chief executive of the state, though can only serve two terms. Delaware elects a 21-member Senate, and a 41-member House of Representatives. The state is represented in the US Congress by one representative and two senators.
