UTAH

Utah, situated between Nevada and Colorado in the western United States, takes its name from a Native American word meaning "mountaintop dwellers". The 219 900 km2 territory consists of a wide variety of landscapes, including salt flats, mountains, lakes, deserts and rainbow-coloured canyons. The climate is hot and dry in the summer, and dry and cold in the winter. More than two thirds of the 2 550 060 population belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormons), and the majority of them live in Salt Lake City and the other cities in Salt Lake Valley. The state has a prosperous tourism industry, as well as copper mining, livestock and the manufacture of space vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Golden and bald eagles can be found in the mountains, and the Gila Monster, a poisonous lizard, dwells in the south-west.

History

The first evidence of human existence in Utah dates back to hunters in the 12th century B.C. Various different groups of Native Americans inhabited the area, though Europeans did not arrive until the late 18th century. The Mormons moved to Utah (which was then part of Mexico) in 1846, and within a very short time a large, self-sufficient community had been established. The territory became part of the United States after the Mexican War, and the Mormons dominated the local government. However, the Mormon practice of polygamy led to conflict with the federal government. The Mormons tried to build a relationship with the Native Americans, but the Shoshone people proved aggressive. Mineral reserves led to an influx of non-Mormon miners and further conflict with the polygamous Mormons. After the church leaders issued a manifesto advising against polygamy, Utah became the 45th state of the Union in 1896.

Politics

The constitution of the state of Utah dates back to 1896. The chief executive is the governor, who is elected to serve a four-year term. The House of Representatives consists of 75 members elected for two years, while the 29 members of the Senate serve a four-year term. Utah is represented in the U.S. House of Representatives by three members and in the U.S. Senate by two members.
