Washington DC - LLC
The USA consists of 50 states and one district. The District of Columbia, which in fact has the same boundaries as Washington D.C. is a federal territory, which was established in 1790, with the specific purpose of becoming home to the new nation's capital city. Washington D.C., occupying 176 km2 at the confluence of the Potomac and Anacostia rivers on the eastern coast, is not to be confused with Washington State in the west. As the capital of the USA, Washington D.C. is dominated by government activity, which provides a major source of employment, though other industries such as tourism, scientific research and the manufacture of technical equipment are also important. Washington D.C. is home to many famous buildings and monuments, including the Capitol, the Pentagon, the White House and the Lincoln Memorial to name but a few. The city is home to more than half a million inhabitants, who enjoy hot, humid summers and cold, damp winters.
History
The District of Columbia was established in 1790 as the site of the capital city of the new nation, and Washington D.C. has served as the seat of the federal government since 1800. Problems began almost immediately as the States refused to pay the taxes requested to finance the establishment of the new capital. Funding proved a constant problem, and meant that the city was slow to develop. The city was burnt by the British in 1814, prompting unsuccessful calls to move the capital to a new site. Following the Civil War, Washington became a leader in social reform, and was the first place to enforce the emancipation of slaves. By the turn of the century the core of the city had finally developed into a modern capital, but vast differences appeared between the "Federal Triangle" and the poorer, mainly black, areas. In the 1930s Washington introduced the country's first public housing authority, and a strong civil rights movement developed. The relationship between city and capital remains uneasy to this day.
Politics
Washington D.C. is the only part of the USA which lacks full political representation. According to the Constitution, Congress has full legislative power over the capital, though the Home Rule Act of 1974 re-introduced elections for a mayor and city council. Financial problems, however, persist, and Congress retains power to review legislation and authorise the budget of the capital.
